The Sticks ‘n’ Skins – The Sessions

Paul M. Quin, attorney/partner at Saxon, Gilmore, Carraway & Gibbons, P.A. was a guest panelist/presenter at The Sticks ‘n’ Skins – The Sessions event recently held at the New York City Collective Schools on October 28, 2011. He has spent many years as a professional drummer and remains active in the music industry. Mr. Quin represents musicians, and particularly drummers, in a number of civil, legal arenas.

The idea for the event came from Jules Follett, author/photographer of Sticks ‘n’ Skins, who is familiar with the business complexities that musicians experience. The purpose was to hold an event where artists can learn more about the business side of a musical career. Other speakers included Jonathan Mover (drummer, owner of Skyline Studios and Editor-in-Chief of Drumhead magazine), Liberty Devitto (drummer/recording artist whose professional career includes playing for Billy Joel for 30 years), Dom Famularo (The Drumming World’s Global Ambassador), Carlos Guzman (Production Manager), and Joe Hibbs (Artist Relations/ Product Development for Mapex drums). The topics included: contract negotiations, entertainment law, marketing, self-promotion, image maintenance, recording technology, and fundamental techniques. Guest speaker at the event was Hal Blaine, legendary drummer, member of the Wrecking Crew, and the drummer on such hits as “Good Vibrations” “Stranger in the Night” “Up, Up and Away” and thousands more!

Paul also attended a Sticks ‘n’ Skins event at the Cutting Room in New York City on October 30, 2011 to honor those drummers who are currently over 80 years old and who contributed to the legacy of American music.

Present at the event to be honored were Joe Porcaro, Hal Blaine, Bobby Morris and Vic Firth. Also honored, but unable to attend, were Ed Shaughnessy, Roy Haynes, and several others. Buddy Rich, Earl Palmer, Joe Morello and others were honored posthumously. At the event, Paul introduced Joe Porcaro to the attendees who included many luminaries from the drumming world, including John DeChristopher of Zildjian, Billy Amendola of Modern Drummer, Rick Drumm of D’Addario & Company, Inc., Lenny White, Steve Smith, Chris Parker, Daniel Glass, Joe Bergamini, Bobby Rondinelli, Will Calhoun and many others.
